I have been using fiberglass and polyester resin for many years to repair through rust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, it is intended for plastic. You know, they make door cards from it, in places under the speakers. Tuned bumpers and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, craftsmen have long been using it for car body repairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to answer your question, it is reliable, it will not fall off and has very good strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally, it is impossible to repair places under load in this way. For example, cups, side members, bottom (partially possible).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many may say that they did it this way, but later on, saffron milk caps appeared in those places anyway. So, they did it wrong!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look, a Kalina recently came to me, the lower part of its front fender was rotted<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cleaned the rust and this is what happened:<\/p>\n\n\n

As you can see, the rust has eaten quite a lot. In this particular case, it would probably be easier to cut the piece off and weld another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I ran out of acid and they were supposed to bring it to me only in a couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t want to wait and repaired it with fiberglass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, after you have completely removed the rust, you need to additionally treat the surface with a rust converter. Then wash it off, degrease the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to do this because you may think you have completely removed it, but it is still in the pores, you just can’t see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And also, when you have cleaned the rust and processed the metal, you need to start repairing it right away. Don’t leave the “bare” metal even for a day, it will become covered with rust again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, we dilute the resin (2g of hardener per hundred grams of resin) and cut off the required piece of material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We apply resin to the metal with a brush and glue the fiberglass:<\/p>\n\n\n

Apply resin on top with a brush. Depending on the damage, you can glue several layers of fabric. I glued two layers to this place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now we wait for it to dry. It takes about an hour. To speed up the process, you can heat it up with a hair dryer. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any more photos, so I’ll tell you this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the resin dries, the fabric becomes like metal, strong. We cut off the excess with a grinder and then sand this place with 80-120 sandpaper. This is necessary in order to fill the risk, since we will put putty later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, we putty this place (I use fiberglass putty) and then paint. That is, everything as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n

If you did everything correctly, then such repair will last for a very long time, not one year. The main thing is to remove all the rust, if you do not do this, soon the rust will form again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
