We are not talking about such standard procedures as fertilizing or pruning, although some shortcomings are also associated with them.

Let’s look at the three most common mistakes that prevent you from getting a good strawberry harvest.

Mistake #1: Excessive application of nitrogen and organic matter during the flowering period

In the early stages of vegetation, strawberries do require nitrogen fertilizers, but when the time comes for flowering and formation of ovaries, excess nitrogen can be harmful.

This is the time when the plant should focus on the development of fruits, and not on the growth of green mass.

During the flowering period, it is recommended to reduce the application of nitrogen or even eliminate it completely, depending on the condition of the plants and soil.

The use of organic matter, such as manure or compost, should be justified and relevant at the beginning of the growing season or when preparing the soil in the fall.

During flowering, additional application of organic matter can lead to excessive foliage growth, which will negatively affect the formation and ripening of fruits.

Mistake #2: Mulching too early

Many gardeners tend to mulch their strawberry beds right after spring, but this can have undesirable consequences.

Mulch can prevent the soil from warming up, which is especially important for strawberries, and also retain excess moisture, which contributes to the development of diseases.

Mulch should be laid no earlier than May, and only after the soil has warmed up well. This will allow the plant roots to receive the necessary temperature conditions for active growth and development.

Mistake #3: Leaving flower stalks on late-planted strawberries

Late planting of strawberries often results in the formation of flower stalks that do not have time to develop properly before the cold weather sets in.

Many gardeners leave these flower stalks in the hope of a harvest, but this can lead to depletion of the plants and a decrease in their resistance to winter conditions.

It is recommended to remove all flower stalks on late planted strawberries so that the plant can fully concentrate on developing a strong root system and foliage, which will be the key to a rich harvest next season.

These mistakes, though seemingly minor, can seriously affect the quality and quantity of your strawberry harvest.
