After all, why exhaust yourself with work when your children are already grown up and your financial situation allows you to relax? Her income was twice as much as her husband’s, and she had several bank deposits. Lena could live on the interest from these deposits alone.

However, the reality turned out to be different. Now she is almost 50, but the children, although grown up, continue to be dependent on her.

They rarely call, and if Lena calls herself, she often faces their irritation. At work, she was saddled with the responsibilities of two, and the phrase “we can’t do without you, Elena Viktorovna” makes her not refuse the additional workload and salary.

It turned out that the boss’s secretary was paid the same as Lena for bringing tea and coffee.

As for her husband, in the evenings, after work, Lena turns from a successful woman into an ordinary housekeeper, hearing criticism addressed to her because dinner is not as tasty as before.

Lena serves everyone, but no one serves her. Why did this happen?

Lena suspected that the roots of the problem went back to her childhood.

Her parents always worked a lot, and she grew up with her grandmother, who looked after two dachas. She received one dacha from her parents, and the other one as an inheritance from her husband’s relatives. The dachas were far away, and for groceries she had to go by bus, train, or walk.

Lena and her grandmother carried heavy bags of apples and plums that her parents didn’t even eat.

They were too busy…

Now she wonders why the dachas weren’t sold or rented out at that time? Why did the grandmother work so much at the dacha, dragging her granddaughter along with her?

At that time, it was customary to value work and harvest, rather than trying to get rid of ballast and earn money.

Grandma lived to be 93, perhaps due to an active life outdoors rather than watching TV.

Lena called herself a “rag” in the mirror and said that she needed to change the situation.

But her subconscious whispered to her that others had it even worse: no job, no husband, sick relatives, no children. Therefore, it is worth being grateful for what you have and continuing to “spin like a squirrel in a wheel.”

But is it possible to get out of this vicious circle?

Psychologists believe so.

How to start respecting yourself? It is important to understand where people use you and where they really need help. Adult children can start taking care of themselves, a husband can cook dinner, and an employer can be changed.

The first step to a new life is to stop helping where it is not critical. Often we do not refuse requests because we are afraid of the consequences: we can be judged for indifference or selfishness. But sometimes you need to give your loved ones the opportunity to face problems on their own.

Such changes may cause discontent, but over time, those around you will understand that you cannot be burdened with trifles. Learn to respect yourself more than others, and this will help you establish harmonious relationships with yourself and others.

Lena always had a clear plan: to retire at 45, or at most at 50, and start living for herself.
