To prevent someone else from accidentally taking their luggage or having their suitcase go round and round on the conveyor belt, travellers now decorate their suitcases with coloured ribbons to make them easily recognisable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, John, a senior baggage handler at Dublin Airport, believes these common strategies could be counterproductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They could make your worst travel fear come true.
Get rid of the tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an interview with RSVP Live, John said that strapping luggage could cause delays, increasing the chances that the bags wouldn’t make it to the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe ribbons that people attach to their bags to easily identify them can cause problems when the bags are scanned in the baggage area,\u201d John explained to the media. \u201cIf a bag can\u2019t be scanned automatically, it will have to be processed manually, which could cause you to miss your flight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you remove old travel stickers and tape from your suitcase, you may be able to get to your destination on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
John advises. \u201cRemove any old stickers from your luggage as they may make scanning difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another thing that could cause problems in your luggage is marzipan, an almond-flavored sweet. John warns that bringing marzipan with you on your trip could cause you to be particularly scrutinized by security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNever put marzipan in your suitcase.\u201d \u201cIt has a similar density to some explosives, so your bag could be searched and you could be asked to leave the plane,\u201d warned the Dublin-based luggage expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
