Imagine a small country village, surrounded by fields, where the air we breathe no longer has the flavor of the seasons but that of agricultural chemicals. Imagine also a man, Wang, in his sixties, a modest farmer, who decides to say no. No to injustice, no to silence, no to the pollution that poisons his daily life. What he didn’t yet know was that this “no” would turn into one of the most significant citizen struggles against an industrial company. And that it would last… sixteen years.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the earth turns into a minefield<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It all began in 2001. One ordinary day, the peaceful lives of Wang Enlin and his neighbors were turned upside down when their farmland was flooded with murky waters. Literally. Sewage, full of  chemical waste<\/strong> , overflowed from a nearby factory owned by Qihua Group, a mineral processing company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequences? Hectares of land are becoming barren.<\/strong>  The local council itself acknowledges that the soil is polluted  “for a long time<\/em> .” For these rural families, it’s a catastrophe: their crops are lost, their health is threatened, their future is compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faced with this injustice, Wang could have given up. But he chose another path. With no legal training and only three years of school under his belt, he embarked on an  extraordinary<\/strong> mission  : to understand the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an old dictionary as his ally and a few books borrowed in exchange for… corn ( yes, really!<\/strong> ), Wang immersed himself in legal texts. He read, copied by hand, compared, and learned. For sixteen years, he taught himself about land rights and environmental protection in China. What others would have seen as an insurmountable mountain, he climbed,  patience after patience<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Wang doesn’t stop there. Alongside his research, he raises awareness among his neighbors. Together, they become aware of their rights and form a veritable  small community of citizens committed<\/strong>  to making their voices heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2007, their story caught the attention of the Pollution Victims Legal Assistance Center. Lawyers joined the fight. And in 2015, after years of waiting, the case finally came to trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David versus Goliath, modern version<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The trial pits a  modest village against a multi-billion dollar industrial giant<\/strong>  . And yet, to everyone’s surprise, it’s the village that wins! In the first instance, the court orders Qihua to pay compensation to the victims,  equivalent to approximately \u20ac110,000<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the company is appealing. But for Wang, his determination is intact.  “Even if we lose, we will continue to fight,”<\/em> he says, standing proudly in his muddy boots and old cotton jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wang’s story is not just one of winning a lawsuit. It is a  symbol of perseverance<\/strong> , an example of resilience in the face of power. In a country where  environmental issues are becoming crucial<\/strong> , her fight is a reminder that even the most modest voices can make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
