“So, ‘conference.’ A whole week,” Marina said, leaning against the doorframe. “And right in Canc\u00fan, when everyone’s on vacation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The company covers everything,” Andr\u00e9s murmured, hiding a pair of beach shorts under a pile of shirts. “It would be weird to say no.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And is Valeria<\/strong> , your colleague, going too?” It wasn’t a question; it sounded like a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9s tensed for a second and continued folding clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014Yes. She presents. Work is work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Like last year’s corporate meeting, when they ‘worked’ until four in the morning,” she replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Same old thing again…” He slammed his suitcase shut. “I’m leaving in three hours.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I forgot to send a report before leaving,” he improvised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Liar,” Valeria smiled, kissing his cheek. “You’re thinking about Marina<\/strong> .”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We agreed not to talk about it here,” he interrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Someday you’ll have to decide,” he said softly. “We can’t hide forever.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014I’ll talk to her after the trip. I promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valeria nodded, hopeful. The week passed between seafood, photos, and hotel rooms. Andr\u00e9s almost stopped thinking about home. Almost<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stopped dead in his tracks: the room was different. Garlands, flowers, balloons; on the wall, photos of his wedding, his travels; on the table, a cake with a candle in the shape of a “10.” On the sofa, Marina<\/strong> \u2026 and a tall, light-haired man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What… what is this?” he managed to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We weren’t expecting you for two hours,” Marina said, surprised. “Today is our tenth anniversary<\/strong> , Andr\u00e9s.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man stood up and held out his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Alejandro<\/strong> . Nice to meet you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9s didn’t take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014What is he doing here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He’s an interior designer,”<\/strong> Marina explained. “I rearranged the apartment while you were at your ‘conference.’ I wanted to surprise you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She took him to see the rest: a new bedroom, warm lamps, paintings. Then she opened the door to Andr\u00e9s’s former studio: a nursery<\/strong> painted in soft tones, with a crib and a teddy bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9s felt the blood drain from his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-I don’t know what to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Don’t say anything,” she replied. “Just answer me one thing: do you love her?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He opened his mouth\u2026 and closed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014I don’t know. I’m confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marina nodded, as if she had expected it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014Okay. So this is what we’ll do: You have one week<\/strong> . Grab your suitcase and go to a friend’s house, a hotel, wherever. Think about us<\/strong> , what you want, the real cost of your decision. Come back in a week<\/strong> and tell me what you’re going to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You’ll leave,” he replied, his voice barely trembling. “I’m not going to stop you. But I want you to be absolutely sure.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andr\u00e9s suddenly saw her differently: the serenity, the dignity, the strength that had captivated him at first… and that he had forgotten to look at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t deserve you,” he whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Maybe,” he gave a weak smile. “But it’s up to you. Now go. Don’t call me these days<\/strong> . “<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took the suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the door closed, Marina returned to the living room. She looked at the cake, the photos, the lights. She went to the window and saw him downstairs, with his suitcase, hesitating, finally walking away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She put her hand to her belly. She wasn’t pregnant.<\/strong> She had asked Alejandro<\/strong> , a friend from school, to help her stage the scene. She knew that lying isn’t a good foundation<\/strong> for rebuilding, but she also knew that sometimes someone needs to lose everything to understand their worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014I broke up with Valeria<\/strong> . Not because you found out, but because I saw myself from the outside and didn’t like what I saw. If you still want, I want to start over<\/strong> . Without lies. With therapy. With real work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’ll set rules,” he said finally. “One truth for every fear. And if you fail again, there’ll be no second scene. There’ll be no stagecraft to save it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
