The so-called evil eye is a popular belief that anyone with the ability to cast it can inflict harm on another person simply by looking at them. For this reason, the affected person is told, “You are the victim of the evil eye.”

It is, therefore, a universal belief, spread across a vast diversity of peoples and cultures. For example, in some Eastern cultures, it is believed that people with light-colored eyes have greater power to cast the evil eye. They are supposedly much more envious and accumulate so much evil that they can inflict it on others simply by looking into their eyes.

According to popular belief, this evil eye can be voluntary or involuntary; whatever it is, tradition holds that it is the product or effect of envy, or even perceived admiration, from the person who casts it.

What is the evil eye?

It is essentially a superstition or popular belief, found extensively in many cities and civilizations. It is, in fact, a deeply rooted and common belief in a wide variety of Hispanic-American and Mediterranean cultures.
According to this belief, a person is capable of causing harm, illness, and misfortune to another simply by looking at them. Therefore, when we are faced with that damaged or affected part, it is said that “the individual is staring, with a fixed gaze, or that they have been given the evil eye.”

That is, it is believed to be caused intentionally or to arise from a person’s hatred or envy toward the “victim.” However, it is believed that there are cases where the evil eye occurs “unintentionally” (without a clear intention).

How to remove the evil eye?

Popular tradition holds that one way to remove the evil eye is through a prayer, which should always be said after making the sign of the cross. Obviously, this prayer is a completely popular belief, which may or may not be true. However, it has been passed down from generation to generation to this day, likely because the intention with which people repeated it helped them satisfy and protect themselves.

In addition to removing the evil eye, there are several forms of protection against the evil eye:

Place a red ribbon on the person concerned.

Hang various amulets in the room where the person works or rests. The most well-known is the Turkish eye.

I pray against the evil eye

A ritual is performed. For this, you need water, oil, and a blessed candle.

Water must be placed in a dish, a candle must be lit, and then the person affected by the evil eye must touch the dish containing the water with their left hand and with their right hand they must touch the shoulder of the person performing the ritual. This person must then trace the sign of the cross on the victim’s forehead and then on the dish containing the water.

Once the signs of the cross are complete, the affected person can remove their hands from the plate and the person. Then, the person performing the ritual must take the oil and drop a first drop into the water. If the drop crumbles and mixes with the water, it’s a clear sign that the victim is affected by the evil eye or envy.

Afterwards, two more drops of water are dropped. If the drops seem to disappear from the dish, prayers and formulas can be said to remove the evil eye.

For those who believe, here’s the ancient secret formula foreliminating the evil eye.
