She was thirty-five, a calm, well-groomed woman who worked as a salesperson in a clothing store, always polite, with a quiet smile and a slightly tired look. Her husband, Sergei, was the complete opposite: loud, sociable, and a lover of feasts, toasts, and noisy relatives. For him, family meant a crowd of people around the table and an obligatory celebration for any occasion.

At first glance, there was nothing wrong with him. He loved his family and was drawn to those close to him. But the problem was that Sergei’s love fell entirely on Alina’s shoulders.

Every holiday in their family followed the same pattern. It didn’t matter what they were celebrating—a mother-in-law’s birthday, a nephew’s birthday, or a regular weekend. On Fridays, Sergei would casually announce, “Tomorrow my sister and her family are coming over, my brother’s stopping by, my mom asked for her signature dish. You’ll cook it, right?” There was no question in his tone, only confidence. And Alina would once again become an unpaid cook, waitress, and cleaner for a dozen guests at once.

Sometimes, after yet another feast, when the guests had left satisfied and the kitchen was awash in dirty dishes, she would quietly try to talk: “Maybe not so often? I’m so tired.” Sergey would dismiss her: “What nonsense? It’s family! That’s how all normal women live. You should be happy, not complaining.” And Alina, swallowing her resentment, went back to baking, frying, and smiling, feeling like a stranger in her own kitchen.

It all became especially acute on her thirty-fifth birthday. A week before the date, she was beaming, sharing her joy: Sergey had agreed to go to a restaurant together, the one she’d dreamed of for years. Just dinner, no guests, no fuss. On the birthday itself, I met her in the morning—she was carrying heavy bags, looking confused. Sergey, it turned out, had “cancelled the restaurant”: supposedly there were problems with the reservation, and they decided to celebrate at home.

That evening, passing by their house, I saw through the open window the familiar scene: laughter, the clinking of glasses, a crowd of guests. And in the kitchen, Alina was at the stove. Sergey burst in on her with a bottle, hugging her and loudly declaring that it was time to go see the guests, since everyone had come to congratulate her. She abruptly freed herself and turned back to the pot. From that evening on, she became quieter and more distant.

The turning point came later—at their six-year-old daughter’s birthday party. Alina had arranged it beforehand: just the three of them, a cake, balloons, and a gift. Sergey had promised. Everything was ready—a children’s table, a unicorn cake, candles. And just as the girl was about to make a wish, the door swung open—the entire family came rushing in, shouting and bearing gifts. Sergey beamed, proud of the “surprise.”

Katya rejoiced, and Alina stared silently at her husband. He looked embarrassed for a moment, but then disappeared into the general hubbub. She left the room and took no further part in the celebration. The guests were treated to sweets and custom-made pizza. The celebration passed… without her.

Next up was Sergey’s birthday. He drew up the guest list and menu, and Alina merely nodded. An hour before the family arrived, as he was setting out the drinks, she, already dressed, picked up her bag and said she was leaving. On the table, there was money and a note with the addresses of nearby cafes and a short phrase: “You can reserve a table for 20 people here.”

Sergei shouted, called, begged—no answer. The guests had to be rushed to a café and paid for with the shared funds. The celebration took place, but there was little joy in it.

Alina returned late in the evening. The house was unusually quiet. Sergey sat in the dark kitchen, accusing her of disgracing him. She calmly said that today he’d gotten exactly the kind of celebration he always arranged: he was the birthday boy, his family were the guests. And she would no longer participate. Either her opinion would be respected, or the celebrations would go on without her.

They say now they celebrate everything just the three of them—with their daughter. And if family is coming, they book a café in advance. And Alina sits at the table, not by the stove, but among the guests. In a beautiful dress, with a glass in hand. Like a hostess. Like a person. Like a woman who has finally come to her own celebration.

I heard this story from my neighbor, Alina.
