Have you noticed? Do you know why?

Recently, I’ve been tormented by a question: why do all the staircases in apartment buildings turn left? And why are the handrails always on the left? Young people, of course, don’t pay attention to this. But for older people, it’s quite awkward to hold onto the handrail with their left hand.

These thoughts first occurred to me as I was climbing the stairs of a five-story building without an elevator. An old woman was walking next to me and needed to get to the fourth floor. I walked with her, of course, and helped her carry her heavy bags up to her apartment, but now I’m haunted by the question of the stairs and railings. So, I decided to look for answers.

It turns out that in ancient times, everything was different.

The proper placement of staircases was considered as early as the Middle Ages. This was considered crucial in the construction of this structure. But back then, all staircases turned to the right. Back then, spiral staircases were built into towers and enclosure walls. Residents constantly suffered from enemy incursions into their territory, as they fought and climbed the staircases. Stairs that turned to the right complicated their task.

So, when a soldier climbed the stairs, he held onto the railing with his right hand, meaning he had to fight exclusively with his left hand. Pretty awkward, don’t you agree? And those soldiers holding the line and advancing toward the enemy held onto the railing with their left hands, meaning they fought with their right. That’s why stairs used to go to the right.

Now the question is: why is it the other way around in the modern world?

In modern multi-story buildings, all staircases turn left, and the handrails are on the left. Also, all entrance doors must open outward. This decision is made for the safety of residents. In the event of a building fire, people will be able to exit quickly if the staircase turns right, and they can hold onto the handrails with their right hand, which is more convenient.

These standards have only recently become commonplace. Relatively recently, staircases turned both right and left. But in modern new buildings, staircases only turn left. In older high-rise buildings, the situation varies. Perhaps the designers anticipated an enemy attack and, by doing so, wanted to help the residents of these buildings?

Recently, I’ve been tormented by a question: why do all the staircases in apartment buildings turn left?
