Don’t worry, we assure you it’s not something to throw away at all; you can care for it with what you have at home without having to resort to expensive products or strange and complicated strategies, and it will last until next Christmas.

The ideal fertilizer is an organic fertilizer for acid-loving plants. The plant should be fertilized between the end of May and September: to avoid mistakes, dilute a liquid fertilizer with high percentages of phosphorus and potassium in the irrigation water every two weeks.

After the holidays, the first thing we do is check the plant’s health. Gently shake it. If the leaves fall off, it needs treatment; if they remain, the plant is healthy. Next, we check the root system. If it’s healthy, we can repot it. If, however, it’s been affected by fungus, we sprinkle it with cinnamon, which will act as a natural antifungal. We choose a slightly larger pot than the previous one and add clay pebbles for drainage and a universal potting mix.

If you notice your plant turning green, it’s not dying; on the contrary, this is its true color. In summer, the plant will lighten in color, while in winter it will return to its bright red hue. So, after the holidays, don’t neglect it if it seems to be losing color. It’s perfectly normal.

To propagate it, let’s do it at the end of February. Take a pot filled with universal potting mix. The cutting should be at least 10-12 cm long and have at least two or three buds (cut with scissors). To plant them, cover at least half of the cutting and a bud (first make a hole to make it easier to insert). Then, with a cotton swab, apply a little white glue to the wound. This is naturally non-toxic to plants and acts as a poultice to prevent nutrient loss.

Although it’s a plant associated with winter, we should keep it indoors during the colder months. Away from heaters and windows, but in a room between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius (61-68 degrees Fahrenheit). In summer, the poinsettia can be placed on the terrace in a semi-shaded spot.

Poinsettias typically need to be watered weekly. However, the key is to water the soil: use non-calcareous water when the soil is dry, pouring the water only into the saucer. Avoid waterlogging; remember to drain the water after ten minutes. Water only when the soil is completely dry; this rule applies year-round.

Have you received or bought a poinsettia and now don’t know how to preserve it at home all year round?
