It all started with a loud explosion coming from the kitchen. Since 2019, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recorded&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>over 450 reports<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;of glass oven doors spontaneously breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But why does this happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The main causes of glass oven door explosions<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/svg\/1f7e1.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udfe1\">\u00a0<strong>Changing the Glass Type<\/strong><br>In the past, oven doors were made of\u00a0\u00a0<strong>heat-resistant borosilicate glass<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u2014the same kind found in laboratory equipment and older oven-safe molds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could withstand sudden temperature changes without damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in recent years, manufacturers have switched to\u00a0\u00a0<strong>cheaper soda-lime glass<\/strong>\u00a0, which is significantly less resistant to thermal loads<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/svg\/1f7e1.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udfe1\">\u00a0<strong>Microdefects in the glass structure:<\/strong><br>During production, tiny inclusions of nickel sulfide may remain in the glass. These inclusions are invisible to the naked eye, but they expand over time and, when heated, can cause sudden fracture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/svg\/1f7e1.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udfe1\">\u00a0<strong>Mechanical damage:<\/strong><br>Even a small scratch or a light blow from a saucepan on the glass can weaken its structure.
