My heart started beating so hard that I felt like it could be heard throughout the house. I closed the notebook out of reflex and hugged it to my chest. Footsteps were approaching in the hallway. I recognized them. It was Andrei’s footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Ana?” he shouted. “Why is the light on here?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I panicked. I looked at my father-in-law. He was staring at me, pleading, as if telling me without words not to betray him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m here,” I replied, trying to keep my voice calm. “I was washing Dad.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andrei entered the room and his gaze immediately fell on his father’s bare chest. His face darkened for a split second. Too short for anyone to notice. But I saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Why did you take his shirt off? I told you not to…” he began, raising his voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“To wash him, Andrei,” I said, looking him straight in the eye. “Or are you washing him with his clothes on?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stopped. He swallowed hard. Then he forced a smile. “You’re tired. You shouldn’t have been taking care of it. I’ll call the nurse.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I saw the bruises,” I said clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His smile disappeared completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 What are you talking about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I opened the notebook and put it in front of him. “About this. And about what you did to him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andrei took a step back. His face turned white. “Dad is delirious. He writes nonsense. Don’t believe him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Then why is he afraid? Why did you warn me not to be alone with him? Why do he have fingerprints on his ribs?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The silence was oppressive. Only my father-in-law’s heavy breathing could be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You have no idea what I’ve been through,” Andrei burst out. “I’ve been his prisoner my whole life. Now it’s his turn to pay.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You need help. Not a helpless father as a punching bag.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I left the room, notebook in hand, and called 112 directly. I didn’t think about the consequences. Only about the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the police and the ambulance arrived, Andrei started crying, praying, saying that it was all a misunderstanding. But the evidence was there. On the body. On paper. In his father’s eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Mihai was taken to the hospital. I left that house that same evening, with a small bag and a heavy heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigations, statements, sleepless nights followed. But I knew one thing for sure: I had done the right thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
