A group of researchers in Australia are delighted after their efforts to propagate the species appear to have paid off.

Recently, ecologists at the Mt Gibson Nature Reserve in Australia made an amazing discovery. In the reserve, they found a group of newborn small, spiky creatures.

But these creatures aren’t just any animals. They belong to the “western quoll” species, a specific type of marsupial carnivore.

This species was once widespread throughout Australia, but with the arrival of the first Europeans, its population declined dramatically. Today, western quolls, also known as chuditch, are found only in the southwestern corner of Australia and in small groups.

This species of marsupial grows to the size of a cat and plays a significant role in the ecosystem. Quolls help control populations of smaller invertebrates, as well as some reptiles and birds.

A new hope
In recent months, researchers have been working to reintroduce these marsupials to the Mt Gibson Reserve, an area where they had previously been extinct.

Now, with the recent discovery of marsupial babies, it’s clear that the researchers’ efforts have been successful. The animals appear to be thriving there and are having no problems reproducing.

“Through regular monitoring, we can see that the quolls are doing well in the reserve, and meeting the first pups from the pouch is a positive sign that they have adapted to their new environment,” said Georgina Anderson, senior ecologist at AWC.

“A quoll we named Aang is a frequent visitor to the monitoring cameras we install at our release sites. He is one of our largest and most impressive quolls, with a personality to match – he often tours several locations to collect the chicken we use as bait and disturbs our bait canisters,” she added.

What a joy to see hope for this species!
