This is the common onset of shingles, a common viral illness after age 50 but still poorly understood. Related to the chickenpox virus, it primarily affects older adults or those with weakened immune systems. What do you need to know about this condition, which, although unnoticed, can have a long-lasting impact on quality of life?

What is shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. This virus remains dormant in the body after chickenpox—often contracted in childhood—and sometimes reactivates years later. It inhabits sensory nerves, which explains the intense pain that typically precedes the skin rash.

Signs of shingles

The disease typically begins with localized pain, often described as burning, tingling, or increased sensitivity to touch. Grouped red blisters then appear, most often forming a band on one side of the body, especially the chest or face. This phase may be accompanied by other symptoms:
* Fever
* Extreme fatigue
* Headaches
* Chills
* Sensitivity to light

Is shingles contagious?

Yes… and no. A person with shingles does not directly transmit the virus. On the other hand, if you’ve never had chickenpox and haven’t been vaccinated against it, contact with the fluid contained in the blisters can lead to a first infection… in the form of chickenpox. The virus can then remain latent in the body, with a future risk of shingles. Therefore, caution is necessary, especially for those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, or infants.

How to relieve and treat shingles?

Treatment is primarily based on rapid intervention. It is recommended to consult a doctor at the first sign of infection. Antiviral medications such as acyclovir or valacyclovir are most effective when administered within the first 72 hours. Treatment can be supplemented with:
* Painkillers to relieve pain
* Cool compresses, oatmeal baths, or calamine lotion to soothe itching
* Rest and plenty of fluids

Complication to watch for: Postherpetic neuralgia

In approximately one in ten people, shingles can leave behind chronic, persistent pain, known as postherpetic neuralgia. Even after the skin lesions resolve, the pain can persist for months or even years. This complication is more common in older adults and can significantly impair quality of life, leading to sleep disturbances, social isolation, and decreased daily activities.

Shingles Prevention: The Vaccine Is Your Best Ally

Since 2017, a vaccine called Shingrix has been recommended in France for people aged 65 and older, or 18 years for those with weakened immune systems. It provides over 90% protection against shingles and its complications. Unlike the older Zostavax vaccine (now withdrawn from the market), Shingrix does not contain a live virus, making it safer for people with weakened immune systems. The vaccine is recommended for:
* Adults aged 65 and older
* People with weakened immune systems (aged 18 and older)
* People who have already had shingles (as relapse is possible)

In conclusion: vigilance and prevention

Shingles is much more than just a skin rash. It’s a painful viral disease, sometimes disabling, but largely preventable with vaccination. Staying alert for early signs and acting quickly can limit acute pain and long-term complications. If you’re over 65 or at increased risk, discuss this with your doctor.

Imagine a burning, unrelenting pain that, for no apparent reason, develops into a streak of blisters on your skin.
