The vacation turned out to be simply wonderful, and the nature there is simply breathtaking, beyond words.

Before heading home, we decided to check out the local market. Our eyes widened at the abundance of bay leaves. A local saleswoman approached us and told us about some interesting ways to use bay leaves, not only in cooking.

1. Eliminating the smell of fish during frying

When you fry fish, the smell spreads throughout the house. Even with the windows open and the extractor hood running, the smell may not go away for a long time. To get rid of it, set fire to a bay leaf. It will smolder and fill the room with the aroma of bay wood. Simply set fire to the leaf and leave it in the kitchen for 10 minutes.

2. Repelling mosquitoes and flies

Mosquitoes and flies are especially annoying on summer evenings. To get rid of them, spread bay leaves near windows, air vents, or balcony doors. The pungent smell of bay repels insects. You can also use bay essential oils by wiping window sashes and doorways with them.

3. Protection of cereals from bugs

Many people face the problem of insects in cereals. Previously, when we lived in a rented apartment and I did not have containers, everything was stored in bags. To prevent bugs from getting in, put a bay leaf in a bag with cereals or flour. Bugs do not tolerate the smell of bay, and your cereals will remain whole and unharmed.

4. Folk omens with bay leaf

Superstitious people use bay leaves as a talisman against lightning, the evil eye, and damage. It is believed that if you put a bay leaf in your wallet, its owner will always have financial well-being.

5. Bay leaf in the laundry

Frequent washing can cause bright clothes to fade and fade. To avoid this, use bay leaves. Simply putting bay leaves in the drum of the washing machine is ineffective, they can crumble and only complicate the situation.

To effectively use bay leaves in laundry, mix 10 bay leaves and 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Place the mixture in a cloth bag and put it in the washing machine drum with your laundry. Wash at a temperature of at least 30 degrees Celsius.

If this method doesn’t work for you, you can make a decoction: for 1 liter of water, take 4 bay leaves and 4 tablespoons of soda, bring to a boil and cook for 20 minutes. Cool the mixture and pour it into a basin with laundry (not white!) for a few hours, then wash in the machine.

Tips for choosing a bay leaf:

Good quality bay leaves have a strong aroma and a bright green color. Do not store them for more than a year, as old leaves lose their aroma, become dull and bitter.

Before using, rinse the bay leaf in cold water and add it to first courses 5-10 minutes before cooking, and to second courses along with sautéed vegetables 30-40 minutes before the end of cooking.

Did you like these tips?
