It’s an opportunity to explore its many health benefits.

Walnuts, perfect for satisfying a small hunger, are nuts that grow on the walnut tree (Juglans regia L.). This tree can reach 25 meters in height and live up to 400 years.

They are easily recognized by their striking gray bark.

Walnuts belong to the nut family (Juglandaceae). The shell, or outer covering, must be cracked before consumption. The shell is inedible, but it is often used by carpenters as a dye.

What are the benefits of walnuts?
Walnuts have many health benefits. In particular:

Antioxidant;
Anti-atherosclerotic, meaning it helps fight cholesterol buildup in the arteries.
Laxative
; Hypocholesterolemic, meaning it lowers the amount of cholesterol in the blood;
Hypotriglyceridemic, meaning walnuts help lower triglyceride levels in the body
; Anti-inflammatory.
Despite their numerous health benefits, walnuts are still very high in calories. Therefore, daily consumption is not recommended. A handful of walnuts (100 g) contains about 654 calories. However, their consumption is a good source of minerals, especially calcium (94 mg/100 g), magnesium (120 mg/100 g), phosphorus (260 mg/100 g) and potassium (399 mg/100 g). Walnuts also contain a significant amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6 (23.3 g/100 g). These nuts are also a good source of vitamin A (52 mcg/100 g).

Walnuts: A cognitive ally.
When you’re feeling a little sluggish, snacking on nuts can give you a boost of energy, but that’s not their only benefit. In 2019, Chinese scientists studied the effects of walnuts on the brain and cognitive function. Their findings were published in the journal Nutrition, Health and Aging.

For their study, the scientists collected data from a study conducted in China that followed 5,000 people aged 55 and over for over 22 years. According to the researchers, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of walnuts had a positive effect on the cognitive health of the participants.

Therefore, the study authors estimated that moderate consumption of nuts may slow age-related cognitive decline and prevent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Walnuts are a powerful laxative.
Due to their high fiber content, walnuts can help relieve bloating and abdominal pain caused by constipation. They also support healthy bowel function. However, you should be careful if you have a sensitive digestive system, as eating walnuts can speed up intestinal transit.

Walnuts help fight cholesterol.
The presence of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in walnuts helps fight the accumulation of bad cholesterol in the body. Their anti-atherosclerotic and cholesterol-lowering properties help reduce the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries and blood. Regular consumption of walnuts also helps protect the cardiovascular system.

Walnuts: This fruit helps fight osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone density and changes in its microarchitecture. Walnuts are an ideal ally to slow its progression, as they are rich in calcium and antioxidants. Eating walnuts is also recommended to slow the progression of atherosclerosis, a disease that affects the inner lining of the arteries.

When is it not recommended to eat walnuts?
Nuts are the cause of many food allergies. To reduce the risk of allergies in young children, it is not recommended to eat nuts until the age of one. If parents, siblings or other relatives have allergies, nuts should be avoided until the child is three years old.

Don’t miss this year’s broadcast on Sunday, February 7, at 8:50 p.m. on France 5: “The Nut Makes Us Faint,” a documentary by Jean-Christophe Chatton.

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it has a positive effect on cognitive function and brain function.
