But one day I discovered a trick that completely changed the way I use remote controls.

And the best part? It’s a simple, affordable, and incredibly fun exercise that you can do on your own.

Battery issue: A small issue, but it’s really beneficial.

You know that feeling: you’re sitting on the couch, you want to watch your favorite movie… but the remote control doesn’t respond. The batteries are dead again. The TV, the fan, and the kids’ toys store an amazing amount of energy, and we don’t even realize it. Instead of buying more batteries, why not replace them for good?

Homemade Rechargeable Remote Control.
The solution is surprisingly simple. To turn a regular remote control into a rechargeable device, you will need the following:

A small battery (3.7V lithium, e.g. 14500 or similar)
A USB charging module (type TP4056, easily available in online stores)
A diode (e.g. 1N4007) to change the voltage as needed.
A little patience, and you’re done!
The plan is to remove the regular batteries and solder the battery wires in their place. If you add a small micro-USB or USB-C port to the case (like the one on the back), your remote control will charge like a smartphone. Convenient, right?

And for the curious: a Bluetooth version.
Want to go even further? You can even turn your remote control into a Bluetooth-enabled device. This method requires a bit more skill: you will need to integrate a microcontroller (such as an ESP32) and completely reprogram the circuit. This is another activity that is suitable for those interested in electronics and crafts. However, if you simply want to get rid of the need for batteries, the first option will be enough.

A small gesture for you, a real step for the planet.
Hundreds of millions of batteries are thrown away in France every year. Even if they are partially recycled, their production is still incredibly energy-intensive. Choosing a rechargeable remote control, even for a simple everyday item, is a concrete step towards a more responsible lifestyle. And to be honest, I feel a huge sense of satisfaction when I use something I created myself. It’s like finding a quiet friend in the living room.

Tired of running to the store every time your batteries run out?
