When I asked why
, the answer was ambiguous—it was for safety, since there’s no voltage on neutral…

So, when connecting any switch, especially lights, etc., you need to remember the main rule: it is the phase that should open, not the neutral.

This is precisely related to that very same safety, but only real safety, not some who-knows-what-made-up kind. Running a neutral wire to a circuit breaker is not only extremely incompetent, but also dangerous.

Well, for example, if the switch disconnects the neutral and not the phase, then life-threatening voltage will always be present in the electrical appliance circuit.

If it’s a lamp socket, its base will always be live. Replacing a lamp in such a socket carries a high risk of receiving a dangerous electric shock.

What does the Electrical Installation Code say about connecting switches?

Incidentally, the Electrical Installation Code (PUE) provides a clear answer regarding the connection of switches in electrical networks:

“In three- and two-wire single-phase networks with a grounded neutral, single-pole switches, which must be installed in the phase wire circuit, or double-pole switches can be used.

In this case, it must be impossible to disconnect one neutral working conductor without disconnecting the phase conductor.”

What does the Electrical Installation Code say about connecting switches?

This is about the use of double-pole circuit breakers at the input, by the way. Thus, it becomes clear that connecting a switch to a phase break is not a whim, as is the case with the phase location in a socket, but a strict necessity, dictated both by the electrical installation regulations themselves and by the safety of their operation.

Having once decided to do the electrical work themselves, and knowing little about it, many subsequently encounter unexpected problems.
