They often don’t arrive alone: they usually appear alongside aphids, small insects that feed on plant sap and produce a sweet substance that attracts ants.

The problem is that while aphids weaken leaves and shoots, ants protect them as if they were their flock. Therefore, if we only scare the ants away for a few days, they will likely return. The key is to block their path and, at the same time, eliminate the cause that attracts them.

A simple, inexpensive way without harsh chemicals is to create a physical barrier with thick aluminum foil.

Why aluminum foil can help against ants

Aluminum foil acts as a difficult barrier to overcome, especially when placed forming a raised edge or a kind of “collar” around the trunk.

Ants can climb many surfaces, but they find it very difficult to get over a thin, bent, and angled metal edge. Encountering this obstacle, they are unable to continue their journey to the branches where the aphids are located.

Over time, unable to reach their food source, many colonies abandon that area.

How to make an aluminum collar to protect trees

For this method you need:

Thick aluminum foil, preferably the kind used for ovens or grills.

Scissors.

Garden twine, thin rope or soft tape.

Optional: a strip of foam rubber or flexible foam.

Step by step

Cut a strip of aluminum foil long enough to wrap around the tree trunk with a little extra.

Next, fold one of the long edges outwards, forming an angle of approximately 90 degrees. That edge will be the part that prevents the ants from passing through.

If you want to enhance the effect, you can make small cuts in that folded edge, as if you were forming a crown with fine points.

Next, place the strip around the trunk, leaving the folded edge facing up. Adjust the bottom part against the bark and secure it gently with thread or string. Don’t tighten it too much, because the tree needs to continue growing.

If the trunk has cracks or irregularities, it’s best to first place a strip of foam rubber. This conforms better to the bark and prevents small gaps where ants could enter.

How to use aluminum in flower pots or planters

If the problem is in a pot, you can cut a circle of aluminum foil the size of the soil surface. Make a hole in the center for the stem to pass through and a few small openings to allow for watering.

Place the aluminum foil on the soil, without pressing down on the stem. Always leave a safety margin to avoid damaging the plant.

In flowerbeds, you can also bury strips of aluminum vertically around the affected area, leaving a few centimeters above the surface. This creates a barrier that hinders the ants’ advance.

The common mistake: fighting ants without eliminating aphids

If there are aphids on the plants, the ants will return again and again. Therefore, in addition to blocking their path, it’s advisable to treat the affected leaves.

A homemade option is to prepare a solution of ash and soap.

Homemade recipe of ash and soap against aphids

Ingredients:

300 grams of well sifted wood ash.

2 liters of boiling water.

Clean water until you have 10 liters.

50 grams of grated white soap or 2 tablespoons of liquid potassium soap.

Preparation:

Place the ash in 2 liters of boiling water and let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Then let it cool, strain the mixture through a cloth or fine sieve, and add water to make 10 liters.

Add the grated or liquid soap and mix well until dissolved.

Apply to affected plants, especially on the underside of the leaves, where aphids usually hide.

This preparation helps reduce the presence of aphids, while the soap improves the adhesion of the mixture to the leaves.

Other natural methods that may help

You can also complement the method with plants and aromas that usually bother ants, such as mint, wormwood, tansy, ground cinnamon or dry ash around the ant trails.

However, these methods tend to be less effective because rain, irrigation, or sun reduce their effectiveness. Therefore, a physical aluminum barrier can be more practical when continuous protection is desired.

Important precautions

Do not completely cover the soil without leaving holes for water and air. The plant needs to breathe and receive moisture properly.

In young plants, leave at least 1 or 2 centimeters of separation between the stem and the aluminum to avoid cuts or wind damage.

Check the barrier every two or three weeks. If a branch, leaf, or weed touches the aluminum, it can serve as a “bridge” for ants to cross.

It is also important to loosen the thread if the trunk grows, so as not to damage the bark.

Tips and recommendations

Apply this method at the beginning of spring, when ants begin to search for food and aphids begin to settle on tender shoots.

Combine the aluminum barrier with aphid control for best results.

Avoid using toxic products near fruits, vegetables, pets, or children.

Attract beneficial insects to your garden, such as ladybugs and lacewings, by planting dill, cilantro, yarrow, or small flowers. These insects help control aphids naturally.

Don’t trust myths like semolina or certain harsh products. Many don’t work, and others can pollute the soil.

Aluminum foil isn’t a magic bullet, but it is a simple, inexpensive, and very useful tool for protecting trees, shrubs, and potted plants. When used in conjunction with aphid control and careful garden maintenance, it can help keep plants healthy without resorting to harsh chemicals.

Ants can become a real problem when they start infesting fruit trees, shrubs, or flowerpots.
