There can be several reasons, but they can be solved.

Empty flowers on zucchini and rotting of small fruits are among the most common disappointments in the summer garden. The plant can look healthy, have large leaves and many yellow flowers, but if pollination, sun, calcium, boron or balanced nutrition is missing, only a few deformed fruits remain from the harvest.

Zucchini is a fast and grateful crop, but during the flowering period it can be more sensitive than it seems. A cold night, rainy days without bees or overfertilization with nitrogen is enough and the plant starts to form flowers that will not bring fruits.

The good news is that most causes can be fixed. First, however, you need to distinguish whether it is a natural start of the season, weak pollination or a real problem with nutrition and conditions.

Why empty flowers appear on zucchini

Empty flowers on zucchini are most often male flowers. They will not form a fruit because their role is to supply pollen for female flowers.

At the beginning of the season, zucchini often first creates more male flowers. It is a natural process by which the plant attracts pollinators and prepares for fruiting.

The problem arises when female flowers do appear, but the small fruits behind them yellow, soften, rot or stop developing. Then you already need to look for the cause.

How to distinguish a male and female flower

A male flower grows on a long thin stalk. Under the flower there is no small fruit, only a straight stem base.

A female flower is recognized by a tiny zucchini directly under the flower. It looks like a miniature fruit that starts to enlarge after successful pollination.

If this small fruit yellows and softens after a few days, it was usually not well pollinated or the plant does not have enough strength to keep it.

Weak pollination is the most common reason

Zucchini needs insects for pollination. Pollen is located deeper in the flower and the wind usually does not transfer it reliably enough.

During rainy, cold or windy weather, bees and bumblebees fly less. Flowers open, but remain without visits from pollinators.

In such a case, the small fruits do not grow. The plant discards them after a short time because an unpollinated fruit would not develop further.

Hand pollination of zucchini helps immediately

If there are few bees or it rains for several days in a row, help the zucchini by hand. The best time is in the morning when the flowers are freshly open.

Pick a male flower, remove the petals and gently touch the center of the female flower with the pollen from the stamens. You can also use a soft brush.

One male flower can pollinate more female flowers. It is important to do it on the day when the flowers are open because their lifespan is short.

Cold and heat slow down fruiting

Zucchini loves warmth, but does not like extremes. Cold nights around eight to ten degrees can delay the formation of female flowers and slow growth.

In a cold start of summer the plant often waits for better conditions. It creates leaves and male flowers, but fruiting starts only after warming up.

During heatwaves the plant can drop flowers from stress. Regular root watering, mulch and protection of the soil from overheating help.

Lack of sun means fewer fruits

Zucchini needs an open sunny place. In the shade it grows more slowly, forms fewer female flowers and fruits develop more weakly.

If it is planted near a fence, under trees or behind taller vegetables, it will have many leaves but less harvest. Lack of light also increases humidity and the risk of molds.

For the next planting choose a place where the plant has at least six to eight hours of light a day. Zucchini will reward you with much more stable fruiting.

Dense planting hides flowers from insects

Zucchini needs a lot of space. Bush varieties can create a plant with a diameter of more than a meter, trailing types take up even more space.

If the plants are too close to each other, the leaves overlap and the flowers remain hidden. Pollinators reach them with more difficulty and humidity under the leaves holds longer.

Leave sufficient spacing between plants. If they are already planted densely, remove old lower leaves and excess weak shoots so the stand opens up.

Excess nitrogen supports leaves, not fruits

At the beginning of growth zucchini needs nitrogen to create strong leaves. If it gets too much of it, however, the plant starts to focus on green mass.

The result is large leaves, a robust bush and few fruits. Female flowers appear later or the plant cannot keep young fruits.

After the start of flowering limit strong nitrogen fertilizers. Prefer potassium, phosphorus, calcium and trace elements.

Potassium and phosphorus support the harvest

Potassium helps the plant manage water and nourish fruits. Phosphorus supports roots, flowering and plant energy.

If the zucchini was fed for a long time only with manure, nettle infusion or other nitrogen waterings, switch to nutrition for fruit vegetables. A mild wood ash solution is also suitable if the soil is not alkaline.

Use ash in moderation. It contains potassium and calcium, but increases soil pH, so it does not belong on every bed in large doses.

Calcium deficiency causes rotting of young fruits

If small zucchini start to soften or rot from the tip, it may be a problem with calcium uptake. It is important for cell firmness and healthy fruit development.

Calcium deficiency does not have to mean that it is not in the soil at all. The plant often cannot absorb it with irregular watering, drought or waterlogging.

Keep the soil evenly moist and do not overwater it suddenly. With a repeated problem a suitable calcium fertilizer according to the instructions helps.

Boron supports flowering and fruit set

Boron is a trace element related to flowering, pollination and fruit formation. With its deficiency the flowers can be weak and ovaries develop worse.

Gardeners often use boric acid in a very weak solution. Common recommended doses move approximately from five to ten grams per ten liters of water, but it always depends on the specific preparation and method of use.

Be careful with boron. It is a micronutrient, so a higher dose can harm the plants. Rather use a weaker solution and do not apply it during hot sun.

Older varieties may need pinching

Some older trailing varieties of pumpkins and zucchini form more female flowers on side shoots. Then pinching the main shoot after the fourth to fifth leaf can help.

This supports the growth of side shoots and the plant can set fruits earlier. With modern bush varieties, however, this intervention is often not needed.

If you do not know what variety you grow, watch its growth. Compact bush zucchini rather do not cut unnecessarily so you do not weaken them.

Seeds have an influence on flowering

With cucurbit plants, seeds two to three years old often prove themselves. Very fresh seeds can with some varieties support more male flowers and later fruiting.

Zucchini seeds keep germination for several years if stored in dry and cool conditions. It is therefore not necessary to sow only the freshest seed.

Before sowing you can briefly heat or soak the seeds according to growers’ recommendations. More important, however, remains a warm place, quality soil and enough light.

Regular harvest prolongs fruiting

Harvest zucchini young while they are tender and the plant easily replaces them with new ones. If you leave overgrown fruits on the plant, it starts to direct energy into seeds.

Large old zucchini slow the formation of new flowers and young fruits. The plant gets a signal that it has already fulfilled its role.

In the time of strong growth harvest every second to third day. Regular harvest is one of the simplest ways to prolong the harvest.

What to do when fruits rot

Check whether the female flowers were pollinated and with a lack of insects pollinate by hand.

Remove rotting small fruits so the plant does not waste energy unnecessarily.

Improve ventilation of the stand by removing old and damaged leaves.

Adjust watering so the soil does not dry out or stand in water.

Supplement potassium, calcium and possibly boron in a safe dose.

Most common mistakes with zucchini

The first mistake is panic at the first male flowers. At the beginning of the season empty flowers are common and do not yet have to mean a problem.

The second mistake is dense planting without air and light. Zucchini then forms large leaves, but the flowers are harder to access for insects.

The third mistake is excess nitrogen. The plant is robust, but the fruits remain weak, deformed or fall off.

A rich zucchini harvest begins at the flowers

Empty flowers on zucchini are often natural, especially at the beginning of the season. If, however, female flowers rot and fruits do not develop, focus on pollination, weather, light, watering and nutrition.

Hand pollination, a more airy stand and limiting nitrogen in favor of potassium, calcium and boron help the fastest. When zucchini gets space, sun and regular harvest, it can fruit persistently the whole summer.

Why do empty flowers without fruits grow on my zucchini and finally rot?
