Agronomist’s Advice

Many gardeners are afraid to prune leaves on tomatoes, thinking that the plant will become weaker. In reality correctly performed removal of leaves helps tomatoes ripen faster, get sick less often and fruit better. The main thing is not to overdo it.

Why it is worth removing excess leaves

While the bush is actively growing, the leaves are needed for nutrition. But over time the lower leaves age, touch the ground, yellow or shade the fruits. Exactly they often become the place for the development of fungal diseases.

When the lower part of the bush ventilates well, after rain or watering it dries faster. This significantly reduces the risk of late blight and other infections appearing.

Another advantage is that nutrients are spent less on old leaves and more go to the fruits. Tomatoes fill faster, become larger and sweeter.

Which leaves need to be removed

First of all cut:

yellowed, dry or damaged leaves;

leaves that lie on the ground;

all leaves below the first cluster if the fruits on it have already started filling;

leaves that strongly thicken the middle of the bush and block access to air.

Do not hurry to cut healthy upper leaves. They continue to work, providing the plant with nutrients.

How to do it correctly

The best time is a dry morning. During the day the cut places will dry, and the risk of infection will be minimal.

Do not remove many leaves at one time. Optimally remove 2–3 leaves from one bush every few days. If you cut half of the green mass at once, the tomato will receive strong stress.

For work use clean secateurs or sharp scissors. It is desirable to periodically disinfect the tool, especially if there were already diseased plants on the plot.

What should not be done

Some gardeners completely bare the bushes, leaving only the fruits. This is a serious mistake. Without a sufficient amount of leaves the tomatoes can get sunburns, and the plant itself will lose the ability to normally nourish the harvest.

Also do not carry out pruning after rain or in the evening when the air is humid. In such conditions the cuts heal longer.

Conclusion

Correct removal of leaves is not a cosmetic procedure, but an important element of tomato care. If you do everything gradually and without haste, the bushes will ventilate better, get sick less, and the fruits will grow large, juicy and ripen significantly faster. Exactly such care helps obtain a generous harvest even in a difficult season.

Many gardeners are afraid to prune leaves on tomatoes, thinking that the plant will become weaker.
