Many people reluctantly replace good Soviet sockets with new ones due to the need to use modern household electrical appliances whose plugs do not fit into the old socket.

Many people use adapters, but if you follow a few simple steps, even an old outlet will last a long time, unless, of course, it’s completely burnt and crumbling inside.

In the picture above, you can see that the only difference between a modern (used) socket without grounding and a Soviet (red) one is the diameter of the holes for the plug.
If you still want to save a rare copy, all you need to do is increase the diameter of the holes in the decorative cover and that’s it!

The internal parts of the old and new style sockets are symmetrical, only the terminals in the old connectors are slightly less spaced apart due to the smaller diameter of the USSR plugs.
Structurally, they are different, but in terms of symmetry, everything matches, so when drilling holes in the lid, you don’t have to worry that something inside will not match and the plug will not fit into the terminal.

To enlarge the holes, you can use something from the tool shown in photo 4. The easiest way to do this is with a 5mm drill bit inserted into a drill or screwdriver.
If you don’t have one, a medium-sized screwdriver will do, but be careful not to break the plastic. In a pinch, a knife will do the trick.

For safety, it’s best to remove the lid first. When widening the holes by any means, especially with a screwdriver, it’s a good idea to do so on both sides of the lid. While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to check the hole size with a Euro plug to make sure it’s the correct size.

As a result, the new format plug passed through the cover just as easily and fit tightly into the old terminals inside, just like the new ones.
Often, the plug holds in such a socket even better, since the terminals of Soviet sockets are made of hard metal, so they hold the plug perfectly.
Keep this in mind; it will probably help someone out at home, in the country, in the entryway, garage, shed, or basement.
