How to care for geraniums: 7 tips for healthy and abundant flowering!

Geraniums are very popular and are among the most popular balcony plants. They have a long flowering period and their care is easy. You can find them on many windows and terraces. If you give them the right care, they will bloom all summer. If you want them to bloom for as long as possible, you must follow the basic rules. 

You don’t need expensive fertilizers from the store. All you need are ingredients you already have at home. In today’s article, we’ll show you how to keep your geraniums healthy and blooming profusely. Their colorful flowers will decorate your balcony.  

How to care for geraniums

  1. Enough light
    These are plants that like warmth and light. It is advisable to place them in a place facing west or south. They need at least 6 hours of direct sun every day. If they are in the shade, they bloom less. 
  2. Airy soil
    It is important to choose an airy substrate. We can choose soil suitable for balcony plants, or create our own substrate. We mix sand, peat and compost. 
  3. Watering Water
    geraniums regularly in the morning or evening. During the summer, you can water geraniums every day. The substrate should remain moist. However, it is important to avoid overwatering. 
  4. Pinching
    We regularly break off the tops of the shoots, this will encourage branching of the geraniums and the plant will bloom profusely. We pinch the geraniums approximately every 2-3 weeks. 
  5. Pest control
    We must regularly check the undersides of the leaves. Geraniums are susceptible to aphids and spider mites. If pests appear, we use a spray. You can use a purchased one or make your own from a soap solution. 
  6. Wintering 
    If we want to preserve our geraniums until the next season, it is important to cut them in the fall, remove them from the box and store them in a place with a temperature of 5-10 degrees. During this period, we water only once a month. 
  7. Homemade yeast fertilizer 
    This is a homemade fertilizer to promote growth and flowering. Take 1 cube of yeast and crush it into 1 liter of lukewarm water. Add sugar to the water and mix. Let the resulting solution sit for 2 hours. Dilute the fertilizer in a ratio of 1:5 and water the geraniums to the roots every 2-3 weeks.
