Many gardeners believe that after collecting the first peas the season for this crop is finished. In reality July is another opportunity to get fresh, sweet pods until autumn. The main thing is to correctly choose the variety and create good conditions for the plants for rapid growth.

When you can sow

The best time is the first and second half of July. If autumn in your region is usually warm, you can sow even until the end of the month. For repeated sowing it is worth choosing early-ripening varieties that mature in approximately 50–60 days.

How to prepare the bed

Peas love loose, light soil without stagnation of water. If the ground has dried out, a day before sowing it is desirable to water it well. Before sowing you can apply a little wood ash — it will enrich the soil with potassium and help the young plants strengthen faster.

Correct sowing

Sow the seeds to a depth of 3–5 cm. Leave about 5–7 cm between the grains, and 25–30 cm between the rows. After sowing lightly compact the soil and water once more. In the heat the bed can be temporarily mulched with a thin layer of mown grass or straw so that moisture is retained longer.

Care on hot days

July peas need regular watering, especially during germination. If the soil dries out, the seedlings may appear unevenly. After each watering it is desirable to carefully loosen the ground so that more air reaches the roots.

When the plants grow up, install low supports for them. This way the stems will not lie on the ground, and the pods will remain clean and healthy.

How to get a good harvest

Do not overkeep ripe pods on the bushes. The more often you collect them, the more actively the plant will form new flowers and ovaries. Exactly regular collection allows prolonging fruiting and getting more sweet peas.

If everything is done correctly, the July sowing will still manage to delight you with fresh, juicy pods when most summer crops are already finishing the season.
