Autumn is not a reason to close the season! September beds can still give you wonderful, juicy radishes. This month is considered ideal for sowing: the earth still holds the warmth of summer, the heat has already receded, and the cold nights have not yet had time to do any harm.
Why you should sow radishes in September
- there is no risk of shooting, which usually occurs in the summer;
- root vegetables grow even, strong and crunchy;
- The harvest ripens quickly – in just 3–4 weeks.
It is best to take early-ripening varieties, and for the end of September, also cold-resistant ones: Sora, Carmen, French Breakfast .
How to sow radishes correctly
- Depth : about 1 cm. If you deepen it more, the shoots will be sparse and uneven.
- Distance between seeds : 4–5 cm so that the root crops have space to develop.
- Watering : Before sowing, moisten the furrows well, then water moderately, without excess water.
Feeding and care
- we leave organic matter (humus, compost) for spring;
- in September, radishes need phosphorus-potassium fertilizers and trace elements (zinc, boron, manganese, iron);
- on cool nights we cover with agrofibre;
- We must thin out densely planted seedlings.
By following these simple rules, you will get a generous, tasty and healthy autumn harvest of radishes.
