If in July the cabbage has already grown large leaves, this does not yet mean that it will form large and dense heads. Exactly now the plant spends a lot of strength on their setting, so without additional nutrition the harvest may turn out significantly more modest than you expected.

There is a simple solution that many gardeners use exactly during this period. It provides the cabbage with the necessary nutrients and helps the plant direct strength to the formation of large heads.

What to feed the cabbage with

For preparing the solution you will need:

• 1 liter of wood ash infusion;
• 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate;
• 10 liters of water.

How to make the ash infusion:

For 1 liter of warm water take approximately 200 g of sifted wood ash. Mix well and leave to infuse for 12–24 hours. After that strain and use for preparing the feeding.

Into a bucket of water pour a liter of ready infusion, add potassium sulfate and mix well until completely dissolved.

How to use correctly

Before feeding be sure to water the bed with ordinary water. Moist soil will help the roots better absorb the nutrients and protect them from damage.

Under each adult plant pour approximately 1–1.5 liters of ready solution, trying not to get on the leaves.

It is enough to carry out such a procedure 1–2 times with an interval of about two weeks.

Why this solution works

Wood ash contains potassium, calcium, phosphorus and a whole complex of microelements. Potassium is responsible for the density of future heads, improves taste qualities and helps the plant more easily tolerate heat.

Potassium sulfate enhances this effect, does not contain chlorine, so it is excellent exactly for cabbage. As a result the heads grow faster, become heavier and store better after harvesting.

What else is worth remembering

Even the best feeding will not give the desired result without regular watering. On hot days cabbage needs a lot of moisture, because exactly water helps the plant accumulate mass.

Also periodically loosen the soil after watering and remove weeds. This improves air access to the roots and allows the cabbage to maximally use all the nutrients.

By following these simple recommendations, already at the end of the season you will be able to collect large, dense and juicy heads that will pleasantly surprise with their sizes.
