Growing cucumbers in a herringbone pattern: an effective and convenient method

If you want to save space on your beds, simplify plant care and at the same time get an excellent cucumber harvest, the “Christmas tree” method will be a real discovery for you.

This method does not require complex structures, but allows you to create a neat and functional growing system.

It has been proven: cucumbers grow better, they are easier to collect, and the appearance of the bed is pleasing to the eye.

Why exactly “Christmas tree”?

  1. Space saving : instead of long beds, only one round hole is needed.
  2. Convenience of harvesting : the fruits grow vertically, there is no need to crawl along the beds and scratch on the leaves.
  3. Simplicity of design : one support (metal or wood) is enough.

How to plant cucumbers using the “Christmas tree” method

  1. Preparing the hole:
    • Choose a location on the site with good lighting.
    • Dig a round hole with a diameter of 1–2 m (the larger the diameter, the more luxuriant the “Christmas tree” will be).
    • Loosen the soil, add a bucket of compost and 2 cups of ash. Mix everything thoroughly.
  2. Installation of the support:
    • Place a support in the center of the hole: a metal pipe, a wooden stake or other suitable material.
    • For a metal pipe, the optimal height is 3 m, of which 1 m should be underground for stability.
  3. Sowing seeds:
    • Place cucumber seeds (9–10 pieces) around the edge of the hole at a distance of about 30 cm.
    • Cover them with soil, water them well and wait for the shoots to emerge.
  4. Garter:
    • Attach hooks or rings for ropes to the top of the support.
    • Tie the ropes to hooks and pegs in the ground so that each sprout has its own support.
    • First, tie up the vines and direct them upwards, then they will grow on their own.

Additional tips

  • For watering, you can use plastic bottles with holes dug into the ground. This allows you to evenly moisten the roots.
  • A wooden stake will do instead of a metal pipe. The metal will last longer, but you can choose the height of the support at your own discretion (2 m will be enough).
  • Sow cucumbers in early May when the weather becomes warm.

Advantages of the method

  • Easy to care for:  the shoots grow upwards and do not spread along the ground.
  • Productivity:  fruits receive more sun and develop better.
  • Aesthetics:  the green “Christmas tree” looks neat and beautiful.

Try the “Christmas tree” method, and your cucumbers will not only please you with a bountiful harvest, but will also decorate your garden.

This method is simple, effective and suitable even for novice gardeners!
