How to Keep Basil Fresh for Longer
- Washing and drying the leaves: The first thing to do is to gently wash the leaves under fresh running water. Make sure to remove any damaged leaves or those with black spots and dots, as they could affect the quality of the other leaves. After washing them, dry them carefully using a soft cloth or paper towels. Avoid rubbing the leaves excessively as this will cause them to blacken or oxidize too quickly.
- Keep the sprigs intact: Do not detach the leaves one by one from the sprig. Leaving them attached to the main stem helps to preserve their freshness for a longer period. This precaution slows the deterioration process and keeps the leaves more protected.
- Cut the end of the sprigs: Use a clean ceramic knife to cut the end of the sprig. This little trick helps keep the basil hydrated, preventing the leaves from drying out too quickly. Ceramic knives are preferable because they do not cause oxidation compared to metal knives.
- Preparing the container for storage: Take a plastic or glass container and place a sheet of non-colored absorbent paper in the bottom. This layer will absorb excess moisture, preventing mold or rapid deterioration of the basil. Place the sprigs on top of the absorbent paper, being careful not to overlap them too much. Overlapping the sprigs could create too much humidity, accelerating the deterioration of the leaves.
- Storage in the refrigerator: close the container tightly, trying to let out as much air as possible. This will prevent condensation from forming inside the container.
