There are images that, at first glance, seem innocuous… and that end up turning your brain like a pancake! Such is the case with this t-shirt that has gone viral on social media: a completely ordinary garment, and yet, a trick question that makes you think. So, we ask you this too: how many holes do you see in this t-shirt? Not so easy, eh?

A very simple question… but one that makes many people hesitate

On paper, it sounds like child’s play. After all, a t-shirt is simple: two sleeves, a collar, a bottom… and a few rips, right? And yet, only a minority get it right the first time. Why? Because our brains love to complicate things.

Most people only consider what’s immediately visible. We rush into things, forget to think, and then, presto, we miss the subtlety. It’s the perfect trap: simple in appearance, but deceptive in practice.

Decryption: the famous 8 holes in the t-shirt

But why is this so misleading?

What makes this conundrum so perplexing is the way we think about it. We often associate the word “hole” with an unusual tear. As a result, we completely overlook the normal openings in a garment—collar, sleeves, hem—which are technically holes.

Another pitfall: we don’t think in 3D. We see two tears at the front, but we forget that they go right through the fabric. It’s like making a hole in a sheet of paper: there are two sides, and therefore two openings. Same here.

In short, this little challenge plays with our perception, our logic… and our tendency to go too fast.
