Some clothes are better left in the closet. On the cover of the April issue of Elle Spanish, Jessica Chastain used an interview to share her strong opinions on current fashion trends. Among the ones she hates the most are low-rise jeans, a favorite among Generation Z, specifically those born between 1995 and 2010. “I know it’s coming back, but I hate low-rise jeans,” said the model, who was born in 1977.

Divergent trend

In the magazine’s columns, the star of the movie  “Interstellar”  (2014) did not mince her words. “I think it’s so gross, especially when you see a thong. I think it’s horrible. And I hate seeing someone’s underwear.” A sentiment echoed by another celebrity: Rihanna. Last December, the wife of rapper ASAP Rocky told the TikTok medium @mysteryfashionist about her biggest fashion regret: daring to wear baggy, low-rise jeans with a revealing thong. “What the hell was I thinking, man?” she said.

It must be said that no one really escaped the low-rise boom, especially in the 2000s, when icons like Paris Hilton and Kate Moss popularized it. However, this controversial denim is currently experiencing a strong comeback, embraced by the most fashionable models, from Bella Hadid to Emily Ratajkowski and Gigi Hadid. And let’s not forget the TikTok generation, which is bringing it back to its former glory since the 2020 lockdown and the return of the “2000s” trend (in French, the 2000s).

Although Jessica Chastain has expressed her opinion, she has no choice but to face the facts. On the catwalks of major brands, low, or even very low, the fit is extremely fashionable. At last London Fashion Week, designer Dilara Findikoglu presented pants with (very) low, high waists. The brand Miu Miu also brought it back into fashion during its autumn/winter 2024-2025 show during Paris Fashion Week in March 2024.

Not so much for the 48-year-old actress, who prefers “clothing that covers up” to “clothing that exposes the buttocks.” As for the fashion trends she would like to see come back, she clarifies: “I don’t really have any, I just wear what I like.” So there’s no doubt she’ll forgive fans of low-rise jeans… On one condition, they wear them for themselves, not for fashion.
