Flavia Leonel Santana is a young Brazilian woman known in her country and on social media as an influencer and yoga teacher. One day, she decided to share her story of allergies, which began when she was 14 years old.

Her allergy began in her teens and manifested as irritation and itching when the young woman took a shower. At first, she thought it was from the soap or shampoo, but nothing changed when she changed products.

“I even took a shower with water, but the allergy continued,” she said. After that, Flavia paid more attention to her lifestyle, especially her diet, to find out if she had any food allergies.

But one day, when it was raining heavily, the influencer noticed something unusual : “I was with an umbrella, and my leg, where the water was splashing, became irritated, and only in that part of my body. That’s when I started thinking that maybe I was allergic to water ,” she explained.

The young woman quickly searched the Internet for reviews or information about a possible water allergy. She had never imagined for a second that such a thing could exist.

To be sure, she went to a dermatologist who administered an allergy test. The doctor diagnosed her with aquagenic urticaria. This was a major surprise for the young Brazilian, who had never had any problems with water before.

Tears or sweat can trigger the allergy (7/10)
Flávia clarified that she can drink water without it causing a rash. However, if her skin is wet, it’s a different story. “When I cry or sweat at the gym, the wet areas of my body become red and full of little bumps, as well as being very itchy and stinging,” she said.

Allergy medicine doesn’t help her (8/10)
Although the young woman tried several anti-allergy medications, they did not give her any positive results. Therefore, Flavia had to change some of her habits, and this remains the same to this day. A choice she fully accepts.

“I don’t go to the pool and I rarely go to the beach because prolonged contact with water aggravates the symptoms and even causes ulcers on the skin. I also take quick showers, about 10 minutes, and always dry myself very well. The allergies start to improve and disappear from my skin after about 30 minutes ,” she added.

According to experts, aquagenic urticaria is incurable. In the case of Flavia, who says she lives a normal life despite occasional attacks, the allergy can disappear in a few years. And this is unexpected, since it appeared suddenly when she was 14 years old.
