People who are visually impaired often find it challenging to navigate our busy and congested society. Fortunately, the lives of these individuals have been greatly improved by technological innovation.
A new high-tech alternative, developed by an Austrian firm called Tech-Innovation, is now available to the vision impaired, complementing canes and service dogs.
A startup has developed a pair of shoes equipped with a sensor that can identify obstacles and notify the sight handicapped via vibration or sound.
The sensors in the InnoMake device respond to obstacles sensed within a range of half a meter to four meters. The sensor is rechargable and has a built-in slot for easy integration into the shoes; its battery life is up to seven days on a single charge. The battery can be completely charged in about three hours.
There is no cost to download the software that comes with the shoe and sensor. Among its many configuration options is the ability to choose the minimum distance from an item before an alarm is triggered.
The designers considered this possibility and built the sensor water-resistant in case you ever wanted to see what happens when it starts to rain or snow. When in intelligent mode, the sensor will deactivate if the user is sitting and reactivate itself whenever it detects movement.
Customers in Austria have the option to try on the shoes at a number of different stores.
Truly, this invention will alter the course of one’s life.
