## How to get rid of bed bugs?
Bed bugs are a real scourge for many homes. They infest mattresses, bite at night, and are difficult to eradicate. Here’s everything you need to know to get rid of them and prevent their return.
## What is a bedbug?
Bed bugs (_Cimex lectularius_) are small, brown, oval insects that feed on human blood. They:
* They do not fly, but move quickly along walls, furniture and textiles
* They are nocturnal, biting mainly during sleep
* They hide in mattresses, bed frames, cracks in walls and furniture
Hotels, hostels, and high-traffic accommodations are often the first places they appear before they infest residential buildings.
## What are the health effects of bed bug bites?
Although they do not transmit diseases, they can cause a number of unpleasant sensations:
1. **Irritating and painful bites**
* Small red bumps, grouped together, often in a line
* Intense itching that gets worse with scratching
2. **Allergic reactions**
Some people may develop significant swelling and serious skin reactions
3. **Stress, anxiety, and insomnia**
The thought of sleeping with these parasites can disrupt sleep and cause anxiety
4. **Risk of secondary infections**
Excessive scratching of the bites can cause skin infections
5. **Psychological impact**
Long-term infestation can lead to feelings of embarrassment and isolation
## How to effectively kill bed bugs?
1. **Inspection and Detection**
* Check mattresses, bed frames, furniture and cracks in walls
* Look for black spots (feces), moulting and white eggs
2. **Thorough Cleaning**
* Wash all bedding, clothing and curtains at a minimum of 60°C
* Vacuum the mattress, carpets and furniture, then discard the vacuum cleaner bag immediately
3. **Heat or Cold Treatment**
* Expose infested items to temperatures above 45°C (steam, dryer, bright sun)
* Place small items in a freezer at -18°C for at least 4 days
4. **Caking Cracks and Furniture**
Seal cracks in walls and furniture with caulk to limit hiding places
5. **Using Specialized Insecticides**
* Choose specialized products based on pyrethrins or neonicotinoids
* Carefully read the instructions to avoid any health risks
6. **Contact a specialist**
If the infestation does not go away, the exterminator may use stronger treatment methods (fumigation, extreme heat).
## Natural remedies for bedbugs!
* **Diatomaceous Earth**: A natural powder that dehydrates bed bugs (sprinkle under your mattress and in corners)
* **Essential Oils**: Lavender, Neem, and Tea Tree act as a repellant spray
* **Isopropyl Alcohol**: Kills bed bugs on contact, but does not destroy eggs
* **Clives and Cinnamon**: Their strong scent repels bed bugs
* **Mint Leaves**: A natural repellent that should be placed under your bed and in furniture
## Tips to prevent infection
**When traveling**
* Inspect mattresses and headboards upon arrival at the hotel
* Do not place your suitcase on the bed, use a luggage stand
**At Home**
* Wash clothes on high heat after your trip
* Use a bed bug cover to protect your mattress
* Seal cracks and reduce clutter in your room
* Be careful with used furniture before bringing it home!
Bed bugs are resilient pests, but with a methodical and preventative approach, infestations can be avoided or effectively eliminated.
