Christmas cactus not blooming? 6 tips on how to care for it so it blooms profusely!

During the winter holidays, the Christmas cactus is one of the most popular houseplants. It has beautiful colorful flowers that can brighten up the interior when it is cold and gloomy outside. Many growers may encounter a problem when caring for a Christmas cactus. The plant grows, but unfortunately, a flood of flowers does not appear. In today’s article, we will look at why this is the case and what to do about it.

Cactus needs the right conditions for abundant flowering , such as watering, plenty of light and suitable temperature. If any of these factors are missing, it will refuse to set buds. You can also encourage its flowering with homemade yeast fertilizer.

Christmas Cactus Care

  1. Lack of light
It needs plenty of diffused light. If it stands in partial shade for a long time, it does not have enough energy to produce flowers. It is advisable to place the flower pot on a western or eastern window. On the contrary, a northern window is too dark.
  2. Incorrect temperature
Temperature plays a big role in its flowering. Many people believe that a cactus needs constant heat, but the opposite is true. For the formation of buds, it is important to give the Christmas cactus a period of lower temperatures of around 12-15 degrees. This process will support the formation of new flower buds.

  1. Too frequent watering
This is not a typical desert cactus, but it still does not tolerate waterlogging. Its roots easily rot in impermeable soil. When waterlogging occurs, the plant uses all its energy for survival, not for flowering. It is ideal to water moderately and regularly.
  2. Lack of rest
This is a plant that needs 6-8 weeks of rest in the fall. Many people make the mistake of leaving their cactus in active growth all year round. During the dormant period, do not fertilize the cactus and watering should be minimal. In September and October, move the pot to a cooler room and reduce watering.

  1. Lack of nutrients
Flowering is an energy-intensive process for the Christmas cactus. If you do not provide the plant with enough nutrients, the flowers simply will not appear. During the period of active growth, it needs regular fertilization. We use fertilizers with a high content of phosphorus and potassium. During the dormant period, we stop fertilizing.
  2. Homemade yeast fertilizer
You can try homemade yeast fertilizer, which contains enough B vitamins, minerals and enzymes. It improves the vitality of the plant and helps it form abundant buds. Dissolve 10g of yeast in 1 liter of lukewarm water. Let it stand for a few hours and then pour the solution over the substrate. Use once a month during the growing season.
