Care for a spathe plant: How to use banana peels as fertilizer!

The Lopatkovec is one of the most popular houseplants. This plant is known for its elegant white flowers. The care of the Lopatkovec is relatively easy, but if you want it to bloom profusely , you must follow the basic rules of care and provide it with enough nutrients. You don’t have to use only store-bought fertilizers for this.

All you need is homemade fertilizer made from banana peels. They are rich in potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which promote plant growth. We will show you practical methods on how you can use them. This is an effective way to promote growth and abundant flowering.

How to use banana peels as fertilizer

  1. Banana water
This is the easiest way to use peels. Simply take the peels from 2-3 bananas, cut them into smaller pieces and put them in a container with a liter of water. Let it steep for 24-48 hours. Strain and use to water the spathe. The potassium content will promote flowering and improve the plant’s resistance to stress.
  2. Powdered fertilizer
Another option is to use dried peels. Place them on a baking sheet and let them dry, either in the sun or at a low temperature in the oven. Then grind them into a fine powder. The resulting fertilizer can be mixed into the substrate when transplanting or occasionally sprinkled on the surface of the soil and gently worked into the soil.

  1. Combination with coffee grounds
You can also combine the peels with coffee grounds. It is rich in nitrogen, which promotes leaf growth. Mix the dried peels together with the coffee grounds. Add the resulting mixture to the substrate. This fertilizer will provide the plant with all the necessary nutrients.
  2. Other tips
It is important to dry the banana peels thoroughly before use. It is also ideal to use organic bananas, or wash the peels very thoroughly before use. Also, do not overdo it with the amount. Excess nutrients can harm the spathe. A smaller and regular dose is better. We use banana water once every 2-3 weeks and powdered fertilizer only 2-3 times a year.

  1. Light
This is a plant that likes diffused light. Lopatkovec does not like direct light, which can burn its leaves. It does well on a north or east window. It can survive in partial shade, but it does not bloom much.
  2. Watering
It likes moist soil but should never stand in water as this can cause root rot. Water when the top layer of the substrate dries out slightly. Water more often in summer and less in winter. Lopatkovec will often tell you that it needs watering when its leaves droop.
