Depending on the species and variety, camellias bloom in autumn or spring. These shrubs thrive in acidic soil and are susceptible to calcareous environments.

During their autumn bloom, camellias sasanqua thrive in rich, deep, non-calcareous soil that is well-drained in winter but remains cool during the summer. The warmth of summer and autumn stimulates and prolongs the flowering of these decorative shrubs. To ensure you choose wisely, buy one already in bloom. The flowers can be single or double, white  ,  pink, red, sometimes two-toned, and often exquisitely fragrant.

Where should you plant your camellia?   If possible, plant it under deciduous trees. An east-facing location is ideal. With its glossy foliage and opulent, decorative blooms, this evergreen shrub remains a great choice for temperate climates.

IF MY FLOOR IS HEAVY, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Cut a hole two to three times wider than the container and a little deeper.

Loosen the bottom layer carefully. On poorly drained soils, place a 5 cm layer of non-calcareous pebbles.

If the soil is slightly acidic (pH between 6 and 7), prepare a mixture consisting of half heather soil, then add a quarter part peat, plus a quarter part garden soil.

Once  the final planting watering has been carried out and the water has infiltrated the soil well, cover the surface under the antlers with hemp flakes, flax or compost.

Tip   : Avoid planting this shrub during frost or snow. It’s best to dig the hole a few days before the arrival of very cold weather, as frost often loosens the planting hole walls.

SUCCESSFULLY GROW YOUR CAMELLIA IN THE GROUND

MATERIAL

Shovel, knife, large container with water, chopsticks, watering can, heather soil.

ADVICE

Plan a sunny spot for your camellia, but not one that gets too hot. Avoid direct sunlight and icy drafts.

PREPARE THE GROUND

The planting hole should be at least twice the size of the root ball. The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5 for a camellia. If your soil is neutral (pH 7), add heather soil to the original soil.

CONSULT THE PLANT

Assess the moisture in the root ball. If it seems dry, soak your container in a large container of water until all the air bubbles disappear. Let it drain well before removing it.

PLACE THE SHRUBBING

If the container is too difficult to remove, stuck to the roots, cut it off. The abundant fuzz around the root ball can be gently loosened to encourage new rootlets to emerge. Place your camellia in the hole.

CREATE A BOWL

To level the top of the root ball with the ground, insert a stick through the hole. Gently loosen the soil around the base. Press down firmly with your foot to eliminate air pockets that could hinder recovery. Place a container around the base of the camellia to retain water.

ORGANIZE THE IRRIGATION

Then fill the container with water, even if the soil is already damp. About two weeks after planting, you may need to add more heather soil due to compaction. Prepare another container for later watering.
