If you are annoyed by the chaos and mess that occurs when cleaning fish, then a simple life hack with a regular plastic bag can be a real revelation for you!
Forget about scales flying in different directions and subsequent lengthy cleaning.
This method is fast, accurate, and incredibly convenient.

What you need: one fresh fish a strong plastic bag (you can use a zip-lock bag or a tight grocery bag a spoon, knife, or just your hands – optional
How to do everything step by step:
Step 1. Place the fish inside the bag. Make sure it is roomy enough to comfortably move your hands inside.
Step 2. Through the wall of the bag, fix the fish with one hand, and with the other, begin to carefully remove the scales, using:
- Back of the knife
- a regular spoon
- or even your own fingers
Thanks to the bag, the scales will not scatter all over the kitchen, but will be neatly collected inside.
Step 3. Once the fish is cleaned, simply remove it from the bag and throw the bag in the trash—no cleaning residue, no mess!
Why this works perfectly:
Minimal cleanup — scales remain in the bag, not contaminating the surface
Easier to hold the fish — plastic shell prevents slipping
Time saving — cleaning is faster and no cleanup is required
Tip for note: if you don’t have a bag at hand, you can try cleaning the fish with the rough side of a sponge under running water – the effect will also be much cleaner than the classic method.
