Cleaning the toilet is important, but doing it regularly is even more important.
But do you pay enough attention to what you use to clean it?
Let us explain.
The toilet is probably one of the places in the house where we spend the most time.
Therefore, it is very important to keep it clean , from the bowl to the base, and, of course, don’t forget about the seat.
But once you’re done cleaning, don’t forget to take care of your toilet brush. If it stays dirty, your cleaning efforts will be in vain and the holder will become a breeding ground for bacteria… and odors. Here are our top tips to avoid that.
Clean the toilet brush thoroughly
When you’re done cleaning the toilet , you might instinctively put the brush back in its holder and continue cleaning elsewhere. This is a mistake. Just like you rinse a sponge after cleaning a surface or put dirty rags in the washing machine after use, your toilet brush needs to be cleaned. It’s true that the idea of cleaning this cleaning tool is not very appealing, but neglecting to do so can lead to the growth of bacteria, mold, and, above all, unpleasant odors in your bathroom.
The best way to prevent excessive dirt is to not clean it immediately after use. Once you’re done cleaning the toilet, you can rinse the brush with the water that comes out when you flush. Then, you can spray or soak it in white vinegar or bleach and leave it for a few hours to disinfect. You can also put some in the bottom of a jar and then empty it. Remember to let the brush dry completely before storing it to avoid the unsightly appearance of stagnant water.
Change your toothbrush every six months.
Just like pillows, blankets or sponges, your toilet brush needs to be replaced. Even if you add regular cleaning and disinfection to your housekeeping routine, it is still best to replace it every six months. Storing it for too long risks developing an entire ecosystem of bacteria that can be harmful in the long run. The toilet bowl should also be replaced once a year if it is made of plastic, for example. Otherwise, you can simply wash and disinfect it regularly .
Note that there are toilet brushes made of stainless steel or glass, for example, and that the brush head is sometimes removable from the handle. This allows you to keep most of your cleaning equipment and only change the brush head. A practical idea to reduce the amount of non-recyclable plastic, at least a little.
