Unlike cleaning the rest of the bathroom, which includes the toilet, sink, and shower, the toilet tank doesn’t need a deep clean every two days or every week. However, you should  clean it at least once every three months  . Therefore, in this article about bathroom cleaning, we explain how  to clean the toilet tank to prevent stagnant water from causing unpleasant odors, limescale buildup, and mold.

The first thing you should do to  clean your toilet tank  is  to turn off the  water supply valve, as you’ll need to empty it. Once the toilet tank is empty,  remove the  tank lid and  dry it completely with an old cloth or rag  you use for cleaning the toilet.

Later, you’ll likely see mineral deposits and even rust in some areas. Immediately  pour in a liter of white vinegar  , which will help dissolve the hard water residue that has accumulated over months, and  let it sit for at least a couple of hours.  If you notice that the toilet tank  is full of mold or a lot of rust  ,  add some liquid soap and a tablespoon of baking soda  to thoroughly remove and disinfect the grime.

After several hours of use,  scrub the toilet bowl with an old, stiff-bristled toothbrush  or one you only use for cleaning the bathroom. This will prevent different types of bacteria from spreading from one area of ​​the house to another. Don’t forget to wipe  the water pumps with the  same  cloth  to ensure you clean the toilet tank thoroughly. You can  dampen this cloth with white vinegar  for a deeper clean.

Scrub the water tank until it’s clean and  then pour the vinegar directly into the toilet bowl.  Finally,  fill the tank with water and a splash of vinegar  and let it sit until you use the toilet again. Don’t forget  to turn the water valve  back on before using the toilet.
