My oven door suddenly exploded: I’ll tell you why it happened and how to avoid such problems.

Last night my oven door suddenly exploded. 😲And the worst part was that the oven wasn’t even working at the time. 😱It turns out I’m not the only one who’s encountered a similar situation 🤔. I’ll tell you why this happens and how to avoid such problems at the link in the comments, and you be careful.⬇️

An ordinary evening turned into a nightmare. It all started with a loud explosion coming from the kitchen. I rushed in and froze in horror: the glass oven doors were completely shattered, and shards of glass were scattered across the floor.

But the most frightening thing was that the oven wasn’t even working at that moment.

And it turns out I’m not the only one who has encountered a similar situation.

According to online reports, there are hundreds of such cases. Since 2019, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recorded  over 450 reports  of glass oven doors spontaneously breaking.

But why does this happen?

The main causes of glass oven door explosions🟡 Changing the Glass Type
In the past, oven doors were made of  heat-resistant borosilicate glass  —the same kind found in laboratory equipment and older oven-safe molds.

It could withstand sudden temperature changes without damage.

However, in recent years, manufacturers have switched to  cheaper soda-lime glass , which is significantly less resistant to thermal loads🟡 Microdefects in the glass structure:
During production, tiny inclusions of nickel sulfide may remain in the glass. These inclusions are invisible to the naked eye, but they expand over time and, when heated, can cause sudden fracture.

🟡 Mechanical damage:
Even a small scratch or a light blow from a saucepan on the glass can weaken its structure. The damage may be unnoticeable, but after a few weeks or months, it can lead to a sudden explosion.

How to prevent glass oven doors from breaking?

✅Avoid using abrasive cleaners, as they can cause microscopic damage.
✅Close the oven door carefully—avoid slamming it, especially if the air inside is hot.
✅Avoid overusing the self-cleaning mode, as it heats the oven to extreme temperatures, increasing the risk of glass breakage.
✅

Inspect the doors regularly—if you notice even the smallest cracks or chips, it’s best to replace the glass promptly.
✅If you notice even the slightest damage, call a professional—don’t risk your safety!
