We bought some chocolates at the store and found something strange inside: we were shocked when we realized what it was.
We bought some ordinary chocolates at the store. We decided not to mention the brand or manufacturer, because that’s not the point right now. When we got home and unwrapped one of the candies, we noticed something very strange inside. At first, I thought it was some kind of unusual filling, but I decided to check the packaging.
Nothing of the sort was listed. We took another look at our find and were truly shocked. Luckily, the kids and I hadn’t had a chance to try the candies yet. But my husband ate one, and soon we had to go to the hospital. We still can’t come to terms with the idea that such a threat was hidden in a seemingly ordinary candy. I’m sharing this story not to scare anyone, but to warn you: always pay attention to what you eat and be careful. Our discovery turned out to be mercury.
## Why is it dangerous?
Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metals. Even small doses can cause poisoning:
* damage to the nervous system and brain;
* kidney and liver dysfunction;
* respiratory and heart problems;
* general intoxication of the body.
Mercury is especially dangerous for children and pregnant women, as it can cause serious complications and even congenital defects.
## How mercury could get into food
There are several scenarios:
* Manufacturing faults β If the factory used old equipment with mercury lamps or devices, a leak could have occurred.
* Storage faults β Mercury could have gotten into food during transportation or storage.
* Intentional contamination β Unfortunately, sometimes someone intentionally adds hazardous substances.
