In July the sun can be so scorching that even strong tomato bushes start to suffer. The leaves curl, the fruits can get sunburns, and part of the ovaries fall off. Many gardeners think that the plants simply lack water and start watering every day. In reality exactly this often becomes the biggest mistake.
Water less often, but significantly more abundantly
Tomato roots are capable of penetrating deep into the soil. If you moisten only the top layer of ground, the plant will start forming a surface root system that quickly dries out.
The best option is to thoroughly soak the soil to a depth of approximately 20–30 centimetres. Then the moisture will be retained longer, and the bush will more easily tolerate the heat.
The best time is morning
It is desirable to water tomatoes before the sun starts to strongly scorch. During the night and morning hours the water manages to penetrate to the roots, and the plant receives a reserve of moisture for the whole day.
If there is no such possibility, evening watering after sunset is allowed, when the soil is no longer overheated.
Do not wet the leaves
Water needs to be poured only at the root. Drops on the leaves in the heat quickly evaporate, creating excess humidity, and this promotes the development of fungal diseases. In addition, cold water on heated plants causes strong stress.
Mulch is the best helper
A layer of mown grass, straw or humus helps retain moisture much longer. The ground does not overheat, and you have to water significantly less often.
What should the water be like?
Do not use icy water from a well or borehole. It sharply cools the roots and can slow the growth of the plant. Water that has warmed up during the day in a barrel or other container is best suited.
A simple rule that agronomists advise: better one quality watering every few days than a little every evening. Exactly this way tomatoes form strong roots, more easily withstand the heat and reward with a generous harvest of juicy fruits.
