What to feed carrots with

In the second half of summer carrots no longer need nitrogen in large quantities. Instead they respond well to potassium and phosphorus, which help accumulate sugars and make the root crops juicier.

An excellent natural option will be wood ash.

For preparing the solution:

• Dissolve 1 glass of sifted ash in 10 liters of water.
• Mix well and let it infuse for 2–3 hours.
• Water the inter-rows on previously moistened soil.

This amount is enough for approximately 2–3 square meters of the bed.

What to feed beets with

Beets respond very well to sodium. That is why many gardeners use ordinary table salt.

Prepare a simple solution:

• 1 tablespoon of salt without a heap per 10 liters of water.

Water the plants at the root once in July. Such watering helps the root crops become sweeter and improves their development.

Beets also respond positively to ash. If you do not want to use the salt solution, you can alternate it with ash feeding.

Several important rules

• Feed only after ordinary watering or rain. • Do not apply fertilizers in the heat — it is best to do this in the evening. • Do not exceed the recommended proportions, because excess nutrients also harm. • If the leaves are healthy and the root crops are actively growing, one July feeding will be enough.
