In the height of summer cucumbers spend a lot of strength on the formation of new vines and fruits. If moisture and nutrients are lacking, the leaves start to yellow at the edges, lose elasticity, and the ovaries become small. During this period the plants especially need soft but regular support.
Experienced gardeners often use a simple solution that helps cucumbers more actively grow green mass, keep healthy leaves longer and fruit continuously.
What you will need
For 10 liters of warm water take:
- 1 liter of whey;
- 10 drops of iodine.
Mix everything well. Water the cucumbers only on well-moistened soil, using approximately 1–1.5 liters of solution under each bush.
Why this method works
Whey contains beneficial lactic acid bacteria and microelements, and iodine is often used in small amounts as an auxiliary means in plant care. Together they help maintain the leaves in good condition and create less favourable conditions for the development of certain fungal diseases.
At the same time it is important to remember: this solution does not replace full feeding. Cucumbers also need nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, especially during mass fruiting.
How to apply correctly
It is best to carry out the watering once a week in the morning or in the evening, when there is no scorching sun. Do not use cold water — cucumbers love warmth, and a sharp temperature drop can slow their growth.
Also do not exceed the recommended amount of iodine. Excess can cause the plants more harm than benefit.
Regular watering, warm water, loose soil and timely care will help the cucumbers remain green longer, grow actively and generously delight with the harvest until the very end of the season.
